Stasher Bag - Silicone Food Pouch

Why Silicone Food Pouches Are The Perfect Alternative To Plastic

You would be surprised how versatile the silicone storage pouches can be. They are primarily promoted as food storage, pantry storage, and any food-related activity. However, I have used my pouches for a multitude of things.

  • As for a toiletries bag – I don’t have a lot of toiletries. The 1-litre bag is perfect for storing my Beauty Kube products, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and basic face care items. It’s clear so I can see what I have missed or if I have too much.
  • Laundry bag – I store my soapberries in them when I head out and about, normally I will use the 500ml bag. The soapberries are sticky, so I store them separately. Perfect for storing laundry sheets. lightweight, you can carry heaps!!
  • I’ve also used them for leftover food from a restaurant. I didn’t have the normal containers I usually take with me but managed to find a storage pouch in the car. Worked perfectly. Yes, I got a lot of stares, but I didn’t care, I wasn’t wasting my food and I saved on getting a plastic container.
  • I have an ice machine – I use the 1.5l bags to store my ice in the freezer and I love that I no longer buy bags of ice, saving on tonnes of plastic bags (I love a good cocktail)

Which Reusable Bag Is The Best?

There are so many different pouches out there. It can be difficult to find the right ethically made products. Some brands Alice and I swear by include:

  • Stasher bags – I haven’t used these yet, but Alice loves hers. One cool feature of the Stasher bags is they are completely made from silicone and clip into themselves. All one piece of material so no worries of losing any parts. Leakproof for storing any liquids and has a wide base for effortless storage. I love that they have a huge selection of sizes and styles. Click here to search for your size and style. These are our favourites!!
  • Ever Eco – Silicone pouches with a slide-on plastic lid. It is a little disappointing the lids are made with plastic, however we still think these are a better alternative than single-use plastic containers. these pouches are so versatile. Fridge/freezer friendly. You can even boil soup in water, just make sure the lid is off and the product is sitting upright. Another cool feature is the measurements on the pouches for perfect portion control.
  • Earths Tribe – 3 sizes of pouches – 500ml, 1000ml & 1500ml made from 100% premium food grade silicone with a BPA-free plastic slider lock.

These are some ethical brands we swear by for their sustainability, ethical practices, and consumer-conscious efforts. We believe it is important to support the businesses that are doing the right thing. The more we support these conscious businesses the less cheap and nasty products will be made.

Brands we avoid at all costs: Amazon, Temu, Aldi & Kmart

We try to avoid any product that is suspiciously low in price. Any brand that doesn’t have a genuine sustainability goal or message usually isn’t ethical.

Sites that stock a range of Silicone storage pouches:

  • Biome – Biome is a B-Corp-certified eco store, they stock a range of different brands including the ones mentioned above.
  • The Well Store – Another well-established Eco-friendly online store based in NSW.
  • Earths Tribe – Has a great range of food storage options.

We urge you to do your research when choosing to go sustainable. To pick brands that are transparent with their sustainable agenda and true to environmental change. It might seem expensive but like any investment, things take time and planning and the environment will thank you for it.

Reusable Bags Benefits

The silicone storage pouches are reusable and easy to store when not needed. You can take these bags to your bulk food stores. Ask the friendly staff to tare the weight of the bag plus clip (if it has one) and use it instead of plastic or single-use paper bags

Reusable Bags Pros And Cons

There are many benefits to using silicone pouches however one obstacle faced is the recycling of these products. Designed to last a lifetime, but when the time comes to dispose of these products, there are limited options for recycling correctly. Silicone is difficult to break down and requires a special factory to break down and remould. Silicone also won’t ever biodegrade or compost.

Can Silicone Go In The Microwave?

Yes, silicone pouches are microwave-safe and safe to boil in water (the pouches with the clips, make sure you don’t put the clip in the water or it will melt at high temperatures) The silicone mats are oven-safe but i’ve never tried using these in the oven, i don’t think it is recommended.
